Intercru: Where are you from? Where are you based?

Cara: I’m from Surrey born and raised. I still love living in a countryside town whilst being near to London. It adds to my creativity I think! I travel back and forth to the city which is really nice to have that contrast of work balance.

How did you get started in photography?

In school, I was only ever good at creative subjects and until college there wasn’t the option of photography. But in my 2nd year there, I was finally able to take a photography class and it was my introduction to the darkroom.

I was fascinated... it was the coolest thing to do because not many colleges had them. I remember my photography teacher saying to me that darkrooms will likely be a thing of the past and will go extinct.

I went on to study Fashion Business. At the time, I had no knowledge of how to be a photographer but I always loved fashion just as much. Afterwards I worked on production sets, and then decided to go and pave my own path as a film photographer.

What drew you to start shooting on film? What do you love most about film photography?

I was reintroduced to film by my dear friend David Wren, an amazing photographer and person. Honestly, it all clicked when I got that first roll back. They weren’t great photos, but it all made absolute sense. Film photography became my passion again. From then on, I discovered so many incredible photographers that instantly inspired me.

What inspires you and your work?

Fashion is definitely at the forefront. I grew up studying fashion intensely. I really try to capture women in a natural and authentic way, emphasising womenswear in what feels right to my art.

I’m also inspired by places, or something that’s circulating in my mind for an idea. Music also heavily inspires me.

In 3 words how would you describe yourself?

I would say a creative-thinker, empathetic and friendly.

If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be?

A director for music videos! I spend a lot of time watching music videos. They’re vital for artists for an online presence, and they’ve always been an art form I’ve been drawn to ever since I can remember.

What is a perfect Saturday for you?

Starting with my journal and meditation, then a walk in the countryside with a view and sauna... oh and coffee. I really enjoy the simple things in life a lot more.

What is your favorite movie of all time? Favorite TV show?

Moulin Rouge. I still keep the DVD even though I don’t even own a DVD player anymore. That movie takes me to another world. Director Baz Lurhmann is a true genius.

I don’t have a favourite TV show as I prefer to watch documentaries. At the moment, I’m really enjoying watching athlete documentaries, or something neuroscience related. Learning about people’s mindsets and the mind are fascinating to me.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

This is difficult to say because there are so many, but I would love to go to Greece. That’s definitely on the cards for 2022! Although Italy is so beautiful and I plan to go back in the new year... can I have two?
