Intercru: Where are you from? Where do you live/work now?

Hamish: I was born in Sydney, Australia, but I have lived on the Gold Coast for most of my life which is where I base myself at the moment.

How did you first get into photography?

During high school and just after, I was set on being a designer and worked doing that for a while when I was asked to shoot some stills for a design piece. Ever since picking up the camera that day I fell in love. I went and bought myself a camera and started shooting.

What is the feeling you like to express with your creative work?

I hope to express nostalgic/happy feelings of summer with my work. I love shooting on grainy films & underexposing them extremely to get shadowy vintage looks. It reminds me of the times where people weren’t so consumed with their phones and social media and enjoyed what was happening in front of them.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

I look for inspiration mainly through Instagram & Pinterest but every now and again I will purchase other photographers’ books and I find that inspires me immensely. Fashion magazines are also another place I look.

What’s your favorite part about photography and going on photoshoots?

I am so in love with the whole process of shooting from planning & finding locations to being there and capturing the moments that are happening in front of me. It is so hard to find my favourite part as I love the whole thing.

I love shooting film as it forces me to slow down and think about light, composure & exposing everything a lot more than just clicking away with a digital camera so I guess that would have to be one of my favourite parts.

What is the best advice about photography you’ve ever received?

My best advice would have to be to not worry about what other people think about my work too much. A lot of the time we base our work off likes & follows and I hate that pretentious shit. That, and to just keep at it...you may not make it overnight & will definitely have some setbacks but if you are persistent you will eventually make something of it and I can promise you that.
