“Take photos, many photos... the more photos you take, the more you learn”

Intercru: Where are you from?

Raul: I was born in Madrid, to a Madrileño father and mother from a small town in Segovia (Martin Muñoz de las Posadas).

Where do you live and work now?

I live in a neighborhood of Madrid called Carabanchel, the same place where I grew up.

I currently work as a photographer for a big Spanish multi-brand fashion company. I have tried to combine it with other photographic works of fashion and advertising.

How did you first get into photography?

Well, it was very casual at first. I liked to take photos with a compact camera but I had no technical knowledge. In fact, I had never used a flash, or even a reflex camera.

So I enrolled in a photography school, and to finish my studies I had to do an internship. They sent me to Daylight Studios, and it turns out that it was and is one of the best professional studios in Spain.

After the training period, I got a full-time job there. I trained and was able to work for 4 years as an assistant to the best Spanish and international photographers, such as Eugenio Recuenco, Outumuro, Rafa Gallar, Juanjo Molina, Jordi Socias, Felix Valiente, and much more. I even got to work in a session with photography masters such as Annie Leibowitz or my admired Peter Lindbergh.

Where do you find creative inspiration?

I really like to see the work of great photographers, old and new. I am constantly looking for works not only of photographers but also from make-up artists, stylists, art directors, filmmakers, and models. I have my phone full of photos that I like and inspire me.

What’s the hardest part about capturing the perfect shot?

The connection with what you are photographing... you have to feel it. If you feel it and it flows, it’s perfect. You have to be connected and inspired.

What’s your favorite part about photography and going on photoshoots?

I can’t pick just one! The chemical laboratory process seems like magic to me- art that has been lost in the rush of digital. Nowadays, we want everything immediately. With modern digital photography, I am left with that moment that you are turning what you had in your head into reality.
